FCC Reschedules Disaster Information Reporting System Test Due to Hurricane

The exercise will now be held Sept. 13

WASHINGTON — As Hurricane Lane heads toward Hawaii, the Federal Communications Commission has postponed the scheduled test of the Disaster Information Reporting System, according to an email shared by Alabama Broadcasters Association President Sharon Tinsley.

Stations registered in the DIRS received a communication alerting them to the change, Tinlsey says. The FCC explained “Due to the possible activation of DIRS for Hurricane Lane in Hawaii, we will be postponing the DIRS exercise for broadcasters until Sept. 13.”

According to the ABA email, “When DIRS is activated, the information the FCC requests from broadcasters includes whether stations are transmitting, the power status and locations of transmitters, whether they are able to transmit from alternate locations and whether the stations have functioning generators.”

Tinsley also cautions that the change does not affect the EAS test form due Aug. 27.
