WASHINGTON NAB Radio Executive Vice President John David will step down from his role as head of the associations radio department Feb. 1, the National Association of Broadcasters announced Monday. However, David will continue to work with the NAB as a senior advisor, according to the same press release.
NAB is reviewing our organizational structure, and in the interim period, Steve Newberry will have oversight of the Radio Department, in addition to his other duties, according to NAB Executive Vice President of Communications Dennis Wharton.
He explained David will switch to a consultant role and will no longer work day-to-day full-time at NAB after Feb. 1. Wharton said,We envision him helping build NAB membership, attending state association meetings on behalf of NAB, among other duties.
NAB President and CEO Gordon Smith described him as an ambassador without peer for radio broadcasting and expressed pleasure that he will continue to work with the association in a new capacity in the same announcement.
David said he will use the change to refocus his advocacy and work on new projects as directed by NAB.
He has been with the NAB since 1989, when he was named vice president of NAB broadcaster congressional relations. In this role, he oversaw state broadcaster associations, the associations political action committee and the legislative liaison committee for grassroots lobbying.
Three years later, he was tapped to head NAB Radio as senior vice president, and in 1998 he was upped to EVP of the same department, acting as NABs radio liaison for membership and service to NAB member radio stations. He also supervised radio sessions at the NAB Show and the Radio Show and was in charge of NABs radio awards programs. He has served as executive producer of the Marconi Radio Awards dinner and show for most of his tenure with NAB.
Prior to joining NAB, David was executive vice president of J. R. Broadcasting Company as owner and general manager of radio stations in Missouri and Kansas from 1971-1988, and also managed stations in Oklahoma. Additionally, he represented Kansas and Missouri as a member of the NAB Radio Board from 1984-1988.
In 2017, he was recognized with the Ward Quaal Leadership Award from the Broadcasters Foundation of America at the spring NAB Show.
David is a past president of the Missouri Broadcasters Association, a recipient of Missouris Distinguished Broadcaster Award and is a member of both the Oklahoma and Missouri broadcasters Hall of Fame.
He is a graduate of Oklahoma State University with a degree in radio/TV communications.
