  Washington – Jerry Lee, the independent owner of WBEB-FM (B101) Philadelphia, will receive the NAB National Radio Award on Sept. 28 during the Radio Luncheon at The NAB Radio Show in Charlotte, NC.Lee has served several terms on the NAB Radio Board during his four decades in radio broadcasting. Following his tenure as president of Broadcast Pioneers, Lee became an active member of several organizations, including the Pennsylvania Association of Broadcasters (PAB) and Radio Advertising Bureau (RAB), and was head of the Research Committee for the Radio Advertising Effectiveness Lab (RAEL). Lee is also the founder of the Broadcast Industry Council to Improve American Productivity and received two Private Sector Initiative Awards from former Presidents Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush.Lee has also demonstrated a commitment to education and community service. He founded the Jerry Lee Center of Criminology at the University of Pennsylvania in 2000 and was appointed by President George W. Bush to the 15-member national board for Education Sciences in 2004. His philanthropic efforts include the establishment of the Jerry Lee Foundation, dedicated to solving problems in the inner city, and his service as a member of the advisory board of the Greater Philadelphia Salvation Army.   Publication of the FCC’s Second Report and Order in the Federal Register on Aug. 16 means that the long-awaited IBOC digital radio rule changes will become the law of the land on Sept. 14.Among the most controversial new provisions will be the green light for 24-hour HD Radio hybrid operation on AM. Critics of Ibiquity’s implementation of AM IBOC digital transmission have charged that many stations currently serving a significant audience within secondary nighttime coverage areas will lose that service area to digitally generated adjacent-channel interference. In a separate but related move announced just this week, the FCC appears to be addressing AM owner coverage anxieties by tendering an NPRM that would grant new FM repeater privileges to eligible AM licensees.Among other key provisions set to go into effect include the right for FMs to commence HD Radio multicasting without experimental authority grants and use of separate FM antennas for HD Radio hybrid operation without STAs.Other matters, such as specific public service requirements, limitations on and regulatory fee assessments for digital subscription services, and what role multicasting will play in any new ownership equation remain to be addressed by future rulemaking.Products from the FloorAPT Worldcast Eclipse

  Washington – The NAB Radio Show will feature a super session entitled The Bedroom Project: How Young Americans Use, Consume and Interact with Technology and Media. The session, designed by Arbitron and conducted by Jacobs Media, will take place on September 26 at 3:45 p.m. in the Charlotte Convention Center. The session will focus on ways that young Americans between the ages of 18 and 28 consume media.The Bedroom Project includes interviews with participants in their natural surroundings to determine how Americans are navigating the digital environment and the effect this has on radio listening. In 1799, 12-year-old Conrad Reed went fishing and brought home a rock weighing about 17 pounds, which the family used as a doorstop for three years before it was recognized by a jeweler as gold.
