Nautel Enhances Broadcast Engineering Experience at Loyalist College

Hackett’s Cove, NS – Jul 16, 2013 – Nautel recently partnered with Loyalist College (Belleville, ON), donating VS Series FM transmitters for use in the school’s Broadcast Engineering Technology (BRET) Advanced Diploma program. The transmitters were utilized in the lab of the second-year broadcast test and measurement course, giving students an opportunity to work with the latest in broadcast transmitter technology.

“We are excited to offer our support to Loyalist College and invest in a new generation of skilled broadcast engineers. It was a natural choice for us given that the BRET Advanced Diploma is a growing and dynamic program,” said Peter Conlon, Nautel president and CEO.

During the recent winter/spring 2013 semester, one Nautel VS300 unit was set up as an exciter, while the other featured Orban Inside audio processing, allowing students to learn to set up a processor. Students set up correct audio feeds, as well as setting and powering up the transmitter for correct operation. They measured output characteristics and confirmed the transmitter was performing as specified. From the data acquired, students put together a lab report outlining parameters measured, as well as specific setup requirements of the transmitter.

“Loyalist is delighted to receive this innovative equipment from Nautel,” said Eric Heidendahl, Loyalist College broadcast technology professor and coordinator. “As many broadcast engineers are retiring, there is high demand for skilled engineering graduates to work in radio broadcast and satellite distribution facilities. Last semester, our students really enjoyed getting their hands on the latest broadcast transmitter technology. It allowed them to gain the real-world experience employers need.”

Loyalist College plans to use the transmitters in other courses within the program. The Loyalist College Broadcast Engineering Technology is one of only two programs of its kind in Canada. It prepares students for a rewarding career in the broadcasting industry by combining rigorous academic standards with hands-on training from industry experts. Two work placements of four and eight weeks provide students with real-life experience and job contacts. Graduates will learn how to design, build and manage broadcast systems, facilities and IT networks. This program is recognized by the Society of Broadcast Engineers.
