There were 13, 563 radio stations licensed with the FCC as of the end of last year. That compares to a total of 13,450 as of Sept. 30, 2003. The breakdown is: 4,794 AM stations, 6,217 commercial FM stations and 2,552 noncommercial FM stations. As of Sept. 30, 2003, those figures were: 4,802 (AM); 6,207 (FM) and 2,441 (noncom FM).
As of Dec. 21, 2003, there were 3,834 FM licensed translators and boosters.
Throw in TV, and the total number of licensed stations was 26,613 as of Dec. 31.
