New royalty fees are taking their toll on U.S. Webcasters.
BRS Media said its Web-Radio statistics show the number of radio Webcasters has dropped by 31 percent in the past year, with the bulk of that loss from U.S. stations. The company said more than 1,000 stations have quit Webcasting.
“And, for the first time since BRS Media began tracking Internet Radio back in 1995, U.S. based stations now represent less then 50 percent of the stations Webcasting,” the company stated.
The number of radio stations broadcasting on the Net is 3,940, down from a high of 5,710 stations last year.
