Genichi Hashimoto was elected as the president of the Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union. He succeeds Zainal Abidin Iberahim of RTM-Malaysia, who had been acting ABU president since Katsuji Ebisawa from NHK-Japan resigned from the post in 2004.
Hashimoto will serve a three-year term beginning Jan. 1. He joined NHK in 1968 and served as general managing director/executive director-general for engineering before becoming president.
