Adult Content Thrown on the Grill

Karmazin came in for some posturing from the panel about adult content.

Sen. Sam Brownback, R-Kansas, went into a detailed line of questioning about “explicit material,” content he said some might call pornographic.

He asked Karmazin if a merged entity would still provide adult content. Karmazin said yes. “We believe not all content needs to be only content that’s acceptable to children.”

Brownback asked whether as a condition of merger approval, Karmazin would agree to follow the same indecency regulations as terrestrial broadcasters. Mel gave a frank answer: no.

The senator named some of the Sirius premium channels, such as Playboy Radio and Nightcalls, and he described porn as related to the high divorce rate. Brownback said he has “problems” with the amount of adult material not being reduced if the merger went through.
