AES Event in Germany Will Discuss Surround for Broadcast

What role will surround sound play in radio?
That’s part of a broader discussion planned for an upcoming AES Convention in Germany. The show will include a symposium on “Surround Sound in Broadcasting.”
“The only medium where surround sound has been lacking so far is radio, apart from some experimental transmissions by public broadcasters, in particular, the Swedish Broadcast,” the AES states in its announcement. “The question is, why the delay? Surround sound can be broadcast using existing satellite-based radio channels, with no need to meet large-scale technical requirements.”
The symposium was organized by two broadcasters who demonstrated a pilot project on broadcasting surround material over radio at a convention in Berlin last summer.
