Band III Sees High Demand in Europe

Mobile providers want to use more UHF spectrum

As the deployment of digital radio in many European countries is taking longer than planned, some mobile service providers want digital television to move to Band III (174-230 MHz), part of the VHF band, freeing up more UHF spectrum for their purposes, according to the European Broadcasting Union.

The EBU issued a guide that explains why Band III cannot replace these frequencies.

For example, the 56 MHz width of the band cannot accommodate the needs of both digital radio and TV, in part because much of it is already in use in the region.

The organization also points out that mobile providers showed no interest in the VHF band during the previous year.
