Beerling started with the BBC in 1957 and worked his way up to controller of the Radio 1 network, a position he held from 1985 to 1993.

Former BBC Radio 1 Controller Johnny Beerling has written an insider’s history of the station. Beerling started with the BBC in 1957 and worked his way up to controller of the Radio 1 network, a position he held from 1985 to 1993.

Radio 1 — The Inside Scene: The Complete Story of Britian’s Favourite Radio Station (ISBN 1-4251-5729-7), published by Trafford Publishing, outlines the politics and personalities of the station over the decades.

Beerling played a central role in the development of Radio 1, recruiting DJs and subsequently producing the its first-ever breakfast show with Tony Blackburn. He also pioneered the classic Radio 1 rock documentary style, acting as executive producer of a 14-hour series on the history of the Beatles.

In 1992 Johnny was the first non-broadcaster to receive the coveted Ferguson Award for an Outstanding Contribution to Music Radio from The Radio Academy and in 1993 was elected President of the Television and Radio Industry Club of Great Britain. More recently he was made a Fellow of The Radio Academy.
