Bill to Raise Indecency Fines Advances in House

The House Commerce Committee passed a bill to raise broadcast indecency fines to $500,000 per violation. The current maximum is $32,500.
A provision allowing individuals to be fined (affecting on-air talent, for example, rather than just the station) was included.
The vote was 46-2. The measure goes to the House floor.
A Senate measure would raise the penalty for broadcast indecency to $325,000 per violation.
Similar legislation failed to pass Congress last fall.
