Broadcasters Foundation Names Award for Quaal

The Broadcasters Foundation of America Pioneer Awards, presented annually at the foundation’s Broadcast Pioneers Breakfast, will be named the Ward L. Quaal Broadcast Pioneer Awards in honor of the retired president of WGN Continental Broadcasting, which is now Tribune Broadcasting.

A new honor for Ward Quaal.

The foundation says Quaal helped to develop WGN Radio and WGN Television into “iconoclastic status” in the broadcasting industry. He also served on the board of the Broadcast Pioneers from 1962–73; it was the forerunner of the Broadcasters Foundation of America. He was chairman of the board for both organizations, most recently from 1994–97. Quaal retired as director in 2003.

The organization said the naming of the awards was made possible with grants to the Broadcasters Foundation of America Endowment Fund from The Hubbard Broadcasting Foundation and the McCormick Tribune Foundation.
