Broadcasters Hold Telethons for Sandy’s Victims

CBS’ N.Y. properties and SBS nationwide

The Spanish Broadcasting System has put together a three-day telethon, Hispanics United, that will run on its 22 major market radio stations and its MegaTV TV network. In those cities SBS has set-up a centralized collection center in each city and “street teams” will be making the rounds at other local stops within the cities.

SBS President and CEO Raúl Alarcón said, “As we learned about the dire conditions in our neighborhoods, SBS decided to coordinate this multimedia effort in order to provide affected residents with food, water and relief supplies.”

The telethon started Wednesday morning and will end Friday. An announcement noted that food, clothing, medicine and household goods (e.g. shovels, rakes, work gloves, cleaning supplies) are chiefly desired along with cash donations. Collected supplies will be distributed this weekend in affected communities in Connecticut, New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania.

CBS will deploy its New York radio properties and WCBS(TV) and WLNY(TV) for a Thursday fundraiser for the Red Cross. Airing from CBS Broadcast Center the event will run 6 a.m.–7 p.m.
