Food, often a topic of interest during the Christmas holidays, also attracted the attention of broadcasters in their charitable efforts.
Entercom Boston’s WAAF(FM) put a couple of personalities on lifts for three days to raise money in Stand Up Against Hunger. For their efforts the Greater Boston, Worcester County and New Hampshire Food Banks shared $80,255. That would provide for over 189,000 meals.
In the Dallas/Fort Worth market, CBS Radio employees volunteered at the North Texas Food bank, packing 23,000 meals on Giving Tuesday.
New York City’s WQHT(FM), an Emmis operation, participated in Lift ’em Up, a gourmet dinner and more, for 200 less-privileged New Yorkers.
KRAI(AM/FM), Craig, Colo., of independent broadcaster Wild West Radio, collected 2,000 toys and 5,000 pounds of food in its 15th annual two-day Holiday Drive.
WAWZ(FM), independent broadcaster Pillar of Fire’s Zarephath, N.J.’s property, worked with local business Passione Legwear to package and donate 7,500 pairs of socks to the needy in New York and New Jersey.
In Philadelphia, Greater Media’s WMGK(FM) worked with a local furniture store and a local tree farm to donate free Christmas trees to military families. A Christmas festival was also held for the recipients.
Down at the far tip of Florida, Key West’s independent station, WIIS(FM) is working with the Community Foundation of the Florida Keys to create the Nonprofit and Volunteer of the Week Awards. Each week a local nonprofit and a volunteer are recognized for their efforts. Winners receive a gift certificate to a local restaurant among other things.
Entercom’s KFXX(AM) in Portland, Ore., used its third annual radiothon devoted to the Special Olympics Oregon to raise $120,000 for the group.
Finally, another Portland station, KUPL(FM), owned by Alpha Broadcasting, worked with a local restaurant and a local business, Team Latus Motors Harley Davidson, for a benefit concert. Proceeds of the concert went to the pregnant widow of police Officer Robert Libke, killed in the line of duty.
