Sen. Sam Brownback, R-Kansas, may try to get an indecency amendment attached to defense legislation being debated in the Senate. Brownback’s bill would raise fines for broadcast indecency tenfold to $275,000 per violation.
“My hope is that since there is such broad agreement on the indecency fines, that we’ll be able to leave it at that,” he told Reuters.
Brownback’s bill now has several provisions beyond raising the indecency fines, including one that would restrict media ownership limits.
A companion bill that would raise the fines only, up to a proposed $500,000, has already passed the House.
Brownback told Reuters, “there’s not a lot of vehicles left” to move the bill forward in the limited days left on the legislative calendar before lawmakers adjourn to campaign.
