B.U. Drops Plans to Sell WRNI

Boston University has backed off plans to sell WRNI(AM), Providence, R.I., and intends to run it as a public station “indefinitely,” reports the Providence Journal. The university had announced it would sell the property in 2004, RW Online previously reported, setting off protest from donors.
The action occurs as a bill has been introduced into the Rhode Island state legislature that would impose a fee on a buyer for the station, should the state attorney general decide a sale is not in the public interest. Proceeds from such a fee would go to a nonprofit group that would promote public radio in the state.
