Building a Station: Step by Step

Media anthropologist Jonathan Marks has been documenting the creation of a new media facility in Porto Novo, Bénin, as part of primer for founding a community radio station.

Media anthropologist Jonathan Marks has been documenting the creation of a new media facility in Porto Novo, Bénin, as part of primer for founding a community radio station.

The Radio Ecole APM project is online at http://omroep.typepad.com/radioecoleapm/.

According to Marks’s “Critical Distance” blog, “the new website explains how we managed to build a complete FM radio station in under a day towards the end of July 2007. The idea is that the ‘lessons learned’ will be translated into local languages so that station managers are able to profit from our experiences.”

The site includes a rundown of the equipment used in the facility, as well as some of the special accommodations for broadcasting in Bénin, such as improvised dust barriers to help protect equipment and the use of sand to control moisture between the panes of glass in the studio.
