The Canadian government expects to rule on three license applications for subscription-based digital radio services this Thursday, reports the Toronto Globe and Mail. Canada’s Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission has been reviewing three proposals: One is from CHUM which would use terrestrial repeaters to cover 50 large metros; one a partnership of Canadian companies and Sirius; and one a partnership of Canadian companies and XM.
CBC, Standard Radio Inc., and Sirius Satellite Radio form one partnership; Canadian Satellite Radio, consisting of XM and Toronto businessman John Bitove, form another.
If licensed by Canada, the new subscription-based services would be available to all Canadians, and the Canadian channels would also be available to U.S. subscribers.
