CBS Radio Closes WFAN Deal

WOR transfer to Clear Channel approved

There’ve been two notable New York market station deals in the last few days.

CBS Radio closed on its $75 million purchase of WFAN(FM) in New York City from Merlin Media.

The station features a simulcast of “Sports Radio 66” WFAN(AM) at 660 kHz. With this acquisition of the full Class B on 101.9 MHz, CBS Radio owns and operates seven stations in the New York City market.

WFAN(AM) celebrated its 25th anniversary of a sports format in July.

Meanwhile, the FCC recently okayed the license transfer of WOR(AM) from Buckley to Clear Channel.

Connoisseur Media had objected to both the WOR transfer and the license renewal for Clear Channel’s WHTZ(FM). Connoisseur said that Clear Channel’s Aloha Station Trust had not divested all of its stations after Clear Channel became a private company in 2008. The FCC approved both the WOR transfer and the WHTZ renewal, saying that neither is part of the Aloha Trust.

The deal gives Clear Channel its first AM in the New York City market.
