Chicago Public Media Workers Unionize

New bargaining unit to cover nearly 50 public media professionals

More public media workers are unionizing.

Chicago Public Media staff members have voted to join SAG-AFTRA. The vote was 40 to 7, according to the union.

The vote follows one last month in which 55 staffers at KPBS radio and television in San Diego elected to join the union.

The new bargaining unit in Chicago will cover 49 public media professionals who produce, report, host and present content for WBEZ(FM), public media service Vocalo, which is broadcast on WBEW(FM), Chesterton, Ind., as well as Sound Opinions and CPM’s digital services.

More than 20 local radio and television stations in the Chicago market work under SAG-AFTRA contracts, according to the union.
