Citizens Groups Call for Public Input in Ownership Rules

A coalition of eight public interest groups reacted to what they believe is the FCC’s inability to agree on how to proceed with the media ownership review. In a joint statement, the groups, which include Common Cause, the media Access Project and the Center for Digital Democracy, said it’s important for the agency to involve the public in a revision of the media ownership rules.
“The court faulted the FCC for ignoring the public last time,” said the group, which called for timely public hearings and enough time for citizens to have input into the process.
Though the FCC passed new media ownership rules in 2003, much of them were stayed pending appeals. The Supreme Court recently declined to overturn a lower court ruling that sent the rules back to the FCC for better justification.
