Classical South Florida Sells Stations

Educational Media Foundation buys stations in West Palm Beach, Miami and Fort Myers

It looks like the classical music format is in for a dry spell, if not extinct, in the southern half of Florida.

American Public Media Group, owner of the Classical South Florida cluster of stations, is selling the group to religious broadcaster Educational Media Foundation. The price is said to be $21.7 million.

The stations in question are WKCP(FM), Miami, WPBI(FM), West Palm Beach and WNPS(FM), Fort Myers.

According to Current, the group had been losing money for years and APM had spent a lot of money in building the group. The deal will realize a loss for APM.

According to a number of local stories, assuming that EMF installs a religious format at the stations and translators, the South Florida area will be without a classical music-formatted station.
