Clear Channel Clarifies Playlist Controversy

Clear Channel Clarifies Playlist Controversy

Inundated with press reports, calls and e-mails, Clear Channel says it did not send a list of banned songs to its stations following the terrorist strikes in New York and Washington. The company did send a list of about 100 songs via e-mail that Clear Channel said might upset some listeners following the Sept. 11 events, but stressed that the decision was left to the stations whether to drop any songs.

“Clear Channel Radio has not banned any songs from any of its radio stations,” the company said in a statement. Clear Channel stated that each program director and general manager must gauge his or her market to determine if play lists should be altered and if so, for how long.
