Clear Channel Goes to the Airport

New airport TV service takes off

It’s not news to anyone in broadcasting but occasionally needs to be remembered that Clear Channel has many operations besides its radio, TV and Internet/mobile media empire in the Clear Channel Entertainment and Media group.

Clear Channel’s big Outdoor Advertising arm has, through the Clear Channel Airports division, just launched an in-airport television network.

Called ClearVision, it plans to offer more than CNN’s well-known news-only airport channel, according to a release. Listed as initial content providers are CBS, NBC, The Wall Street Journal and even the Tennis Channel. News, entertainment, music, sports and other programming will be made available from some 100 content providers.

The announcement mentions that the network may use Wi-Fi delivery via smartphones and tablets to address the individual traveler rather than standard single-channel delivery via centrally-located large screen TVs.

Clear Channel’s technology partner is connectiVision Digital Networks. Raleigh-Durham International Airport in North Carolina is the initial outlet with a larger roll-out expected in November.
