Clearwire Details Its IP Network Suppliers

‘Super-fast mobile Internet,’ now in four cities, comes to 10 more on Sept. 1

Pushing ahead with plans for its national 4G network, Clearwire Communications said it has completed the selection of its network infrastructure suppliers.

This follows the announcement last week that the service, now available in four cities, will kick off in 10 more markets on Sept. 1.

It signed Huawei to supply WiMax radio access network equipment including base stations and element management system components. Among other vendors, Motorola and Samsung are providing RAN equipment; Cisco is doing core Internet protocol next-generation network infrastructure; Ciena has base station switching; and DragonWave will provide microwave backhaul transport. Motorola provides additional microwave backhaul equipment.

CTO John Saw highlighted the network’s speeds, capacity and mobility: “We have designed an all-IP network that is efficient, low-cost and scalable” using standards-based technology.

Clearwire is calling its 4G offering Clear and promises that the “super-fast” mobile Internet service will allow mobile broadband Internet at speeds typical of wired connections. Using WiMax technology, the service overcomes range limitations of traditional Wi-Fi hot spots.

Clearwire said last week it will launch service on Sept. 1 in Boise, Idaho; Bellingham, Wash.; and eight markets in Texas including Abilene, Amarillo, Corpus Christi, Lubbock, Midland/Odessa, Killeen/Temple, Waco and Wichita Falls.

It earlier launched in Atlanta; Baltimore, Las Vegas and Portland, Ore. Still to come this year: Chicago, Charlotte, Dallas/Ft. Worth, Honolulu, Philadelphia and Seattle.

The company aims for 80 markets covering up to 120 million people by the end of next year.
