Cliq Uses Radio to Sell Downloads

UBC Media has announced details of its Cliq instant music buying service.

UBC Media has announced details of its Cliq instant music buying service.

The service allows consumers to purchase music as they hear it on the radio. The system broadcasts an information service with track details and a “buy” button in a dedicated data channel alongside the radio station’s audio stream.

Cliq is currently being trialed on the digital service of Heart 106.2 in London, and UBC is planning for a commercial launch later this year. The service also operates on the Lobster digital radio mobile phone from Virgin Mobile; a Java-based player for other mobile phones is in development.

Under an agreement with Imagination Technologies, Cliq capabilities will be added to new PURE Digital DAB and Internet digital radio receivers.

UBC has in place the infrastructure and agreements to enable the service in the United Kingdom, but it hopes to license Cliq in other nations, too.
