Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty and Voice of America are coordinating coverage in Afghanistan to provide a round-the-clock stream of news, music and features in the Dari and Pashto languages. The program was heard for the first time in both shortwave and FM on Sunday, Aug. 4. According to Thomas Dine, RFE/RL president, the new coordinated Afghan radio stream demonstrates how RFE/RL and VOA can combine forces to serve their listeners while maintaining each broadcaster’s mission.
Twelve hours of programming are produced daily by each broadcaster, marking a 1.5-hour increase per day by RFE/RL. Programs start on the hour in Afghanistan with Dari on the even hours and Pashto programming on the odd hour. Programs share common sign-on music and other production elements. Programs are aired in Kabul on 100.5 FM and RFE/RL’s Radio Free Afghanistan broadcasts are available live and on-demand on the Internet at www.rferl.org/bd/af.
