On Thursday at least 47 college and high school radio stations across the country will work together as part of the “We Are WRAS” campaign. WRAS(FM) is the radio station of Georgia State University in Atlanta. The student-run station recently found out that the school’s administration struck a deal with Georgia Public Broadcasting to hand over air time from 5 a.m. to 7 p.m. to the public broadcaster and sideline the student-created programming for nighttime airing.
The “We Are WRAS” campaign involves a radio simulcast from WRAS to highlight the fight to remain a student-run station. For one hour, listeners across the country will hear the Atlanta-based station on other college radio stations.
WRAS, in partnership with College Radio Day, will produce a special program to celebrate WRAS and to highlight what the station has contributed.
“To our fellow college stations across North America, we at WRAS humbly ask for your support in this battle to retain our student voice,” outgoing General Manager of WRAS Anastasia Zimitravich said in a statement. “By airing this one-hour public affairs program, which focuses on the history and legacy of WRAS Album 88.5 FM, you can show support for our cause and help spread the word of college radio’s influence. WRAS-Atlanta asks you, the future broadcasters of America, to help us educate the public on how college radio affects music, media, and opportunities for students.”
The program will include audio messages of support from many of the participating radio stations.
