Consumer Electronics Sales Top $90 Billion

Consumer Electronics Sales Top $90 Billion

Sales of consumer electronic products totaled $90 billion in 2000 – a 10 % increase over the year before, said Gary Shapiro, president/CEO of the Consumer Electronics Association, as he opened the association’s show Last Saturday.
Several product categories are responsible for that growth, including MP3 and DVD. Shapiro predicts the industry will see $96 billion in sales in 2001.
Contrary to reports, consumers are buying digital TV’s, said Shapiro. About $1.4 billion worth of DTV’s will be sold this year.
CES has created a new wireless communications division within the association, reacting to the growth of that product category. More than 200 wireless exhibitors showed product at CES.
