Contest Encourages Women in African Community Radio

Amarc, Search for Common Ground and Elenos to provide training

Amarc Europe Women Network, Search for Common Ground and Elenos are sponsoring a contest, which promotes women in media and focuses on empowering community radio broadcasters in Africa.

The Women Radio Training Network, an e-learning platform, will then teach technical skills and best practices to female professionals who can then pass on their knowledge to their colleagues.

To participate, stations must have a broadcast license, at least one woman on staff; represent an existing community radio constituting a positive example of female communication; and be prepared to maintain contact with Elenos.

Participants must produce two types of content: five spots, 30 seconds each (one in English or French while the others can be in local languages); three programs, 20 to 30 minutes each.

They should also include a description of activities, content, the social/development objectives, strengths and weaknesses. Entrants should illustrate how they could benefit from the training and the equipment,

In addition, competitors must provide a summary, containing title and overview of the format, operation method, authors, objectives, duration, date and place of broadcast.

The content must address at least one of these themes: women’s human rights; health, sexual and reproductive rights; right of education; economic empowerment or rape as a weapon.

Entries will be accepted online March 17 through June 11, 2014 and must upload submissions by July 25. The jury will be composed of five members and chaired by a president. Entries will be judged on consistency, originality and quality. The winner will be announced November 14, 2014, and the award ceremony will follow.

The winner will receive an Elenos 500 W transmitter, a personalized streaming player for a one-year period and Elenos shirts. Three contestants will receive a personalized streamer for six months, as well as shirts. Every participant will have the opportunity to receive technical training on high frequency radio.
