Of the more than 10,000 commercial stations in the U.S., slightly more than 20 percent feature country formats, according to “The 2001 Study of Radio Formats” released by Interep Research.
Country is the leading format, according to the report, followed by the news/talk format, which is featured on almost 12 percent of all stations.
Regionally, country has that highest reach in the South and North Central states and non-metropolitan statistical areas.
Contemporary hit radio has the highest reach among adults 18 to 34, while modern rock and CHR have the youngest median of all formats. Adult standards and easy listening show the highest median age.
