CPB says so far, it has funded the digital conversion of 640 public radio transmitters, accounting for 72% of all public radio transmitters.
The Corporation for Public Broadcasting now has opened another grant round for HD conversion. The deadline to file applications is Nov. 23.
This round will total $7 million; stations that receive such grants need to raise matching funds. Word is that some stations are dragging their feet in applying because they don’t want to raise the match. Yet the money for radio won’t be around forever; it could be applied elsewhere, like TV, if radio pubcasters don’t step up.
More than 300 public radio stations are transmitting digital signals.
