Cumulus Media announced that it has appointed 36-year radio broadcast veteran Gary Mertins as vice president/market manager for Cumulus’ four-station cluster in Melbourne, Fla. Additionally, the company says broadcasting and marketing professional John Sutherland has been promoted to VP/market manager for its five-station cluster in Providence, R.I.
Mertins joins Cumulus from West Virginia Radio Corp., where he has served as market manager for the company’s four-station group in Morgantown, W.Va., since 2005. In addition to his market management duties, he also served as director of sales. Under his leadership, WVAQ(FM) won five NAB Marconi awards including CHR Station of the Year twice and Small Market Station of the Year.
Mertins began his career in programming before joining the sales team after graduating from West Virginia University. He previously served as general manager of WCHS and WKWS in Charleston, W.V., and as sales manager of the West Virginia Metronews Radio Network. He was also GM of WPCM(FM) and WBBB(AM) in Burlington, N.C., for Curtis Media Group.
Regional Vice President Pete DeSimone said, “Gary’s years of experience and success running a similarly-formatted cluster for West Virginia Radio Corp. make this a natural fit for Gary and the Melbourne market.”
Sutherland previously served Cumulus Media as VP of sales in Worcester, Mass., a position he has held since 2013. Prior to that, he was chief visual officer for Sutherland Marketing Group. He was also vice president for Clear Channel Radio (iHeartMedia). Sutherland holds a B.S. in Communications from Ithaca College.
“John has many years of broadcast history in the northeast and his tremendous track record speaks for itself,” said Cumulus Senior Vice President Gary Pizzati.
