Commercial Radio Australia released data regarding DAB+ digital radio in Australia in the 2013 Digital Radio Industry Report.
According to the CRA, digital radio sales have grown to 192,974 in a four-month period, and nearly 1.5 million people now tune in weekly. The highest sales figures of DAB+ digital radios were recorded over the 2012-13 Christmas and New Year season: 1,195,940 — an increase of 13.57 percent year on year.
PwC originally forecast DAB+ household penetration would be 16 percent by June 2014, then revised to 16 percent by December 2013. But it now estimates household penetration reached 15.2 percent at the end of January 2013.
“The latest figures are proof positive that Australians have embraced digital radio,” Commercial Radio Australia CEO Joan Warner said. “Even without the impetus of a switch off date, DAB+ digital radio uptake continues to increase.”
The industry report includes the number of vehicles sold with DAB+ as standard or added as an option. Early figures indicate that nearly 14,000 new vehicles have been sold with DAB+ in Australia.
The report finds that approximately 1.5 million people, or 11.6 percent of radio listeners, listen to radio on a DAB+ digital radio each week in the five state capital cities and time spent listening via DAB+ digital radio is double that of radio online.
