According to Digital Radio UK, digital radio listening is now one-third of all radio listening as of Quarter Four of 2012, up 14 percent year-over-year.

In a recent press release, the group revealed that approximately 25.2 million people per week currently listen to digital radio, reaching about 48.2 percent of all adults in the U.K. and 53.6 percent of total listeners in the country.

According to the report, DAB now represents 21.1 percent of radio listening hours, while online listening is credited with 4.9 percent, and both platforms demonstrated significant growth in 2012. Weekly, DAB covers 219 million listening hours, and 42 percent of the population now owns a digital radio set. Digital radio listening via the Internet and mobile apps also increased, with mobile phone listening growing 28 percent year over year.

BBC 6 Music now has about 1.9 million listeners, an increase of 31 percent, which makes it the most popular digital-only radio station. Smash Hits was the largest commercial digital radio station, with about one million listeners in total.

“Digital radio continues to transform the way people listen to the radio and one third of all listening to digital platforms represents an important milestone,” said Ford Ennals, CEO of Digital Radio UK.
