DTV Tuners Mandated

DTV Tuners Mandated

The FCC has mandated manufacturers include DTV tuners in new TV sets by 2007. By enacting a five-year rollout schedule, the commission is trying to lower costs for equipment manufacturers and consumers. The Consumer Electronics Association and some of its members oppose the DTV tuner mandate while NAB applauded the decision. “FCC Chairman Powell and the commission recognized the congressional imperative to stimulate the DTV marketplace, and deserve enormous credit for taking pro-consumer steps to jump-start the transition,” NAB President/CEO Eddie Fritts stated.
The FCC also began a rulemaking designed to ease the DTV transition. The proceeding explores whether the agency can and should mandate the use of a copy protection technology for DTV, and what impact such regulation would have on consumers.
