Engineers Kiss Babies, Shake Hands

Figuratively, at least; SBE will elect new officers and board, with Lopez unopposed for president

It’s time again to clean electoral house at the Society of Broadcast Engineers; all offices, along with six of the 12 board directorships, are up for grabs, though there’s not too much grabbing at least among posts at the officers’ level.

Look for Vincent Lopez to take the helm as president; he’s the only candidate to run to replace Barry Thomas, who is nearing the completion of his second term and cannot run again.

Ballots have been mailed to SBE members. Aug.27 is the voting deadline. Candidates will be inducted at a national board meeting on Oct. 7 in Verona, N.Y.

According to the SBE:

The lone presidential candidate is Vincent Lopez, CEV, CBNT, from Syracuse, N.Y. Lopez is director of engineering for WSYT/WNYS(TV) and is currently the vice president of SBE.

The vice presidential candidate is Ralph Hogan, CPBE, DRB, CBNT, from Tempe, Ariz. Hogan is director of engineering at KJZZ(FM)/KBAQ(FM)/SunSounds of Arizona. He’s currently treasurer of SBE.

Running for secretary again is Ted Hand, CPBE, AMD, 8-VSB, CBNT from Charlotte, N.C. Hand is the chief engineer for WSOC-TV/DT; WAXM-TV/DT.

Running for treasurer is Andrea Cummis, CBT, CTO, from Roseland, N.J. Cummis is a broadcast technology consultant and project manager for Media Project Partners.

However, there is a bit of competition at the board level, with eight candidates vying for six director seats. Somebody’s going home without a seat. According to SBE the candidates are (in alphabetical order):

Michael Englehaupt, CBT, from San Francisco, director of broadcast operations and engineering for KPIX(TV)/KBCW(TV).

Mark Heller, CBRE, CTO, from Two Rivers, Wis., president, general manager and chief engineer for WTRW Inc./WGBW Radio.

James E. Leifer, CPBE, from West Palm Beach, Fla., director of engineering and IT for Clear Channel Communications Palm Beach.

Jerry Massey, CPBE, DRB, AMD, 8-VSB, CBNT, from Greenville, S.C., corporate regional engineer for Entercom Communications Inc.

David Priester, CPBE, from Ithaca, N.Y., director of technical operations at the Roy H. Park School of Communications, Ithaca College.

Marcelo Sanchez, CPBE, from Doral, Fla., director of broadcast operations and engineering for WFOR/WBFS(TV).

Christopher H. Scherer, CPBE, CBNT, from Overland Park, Kan., editor of Radio magazine.

Joe Snelson, CPBE, from Henderson, Nev., director of engineering for the Meredith Broadcasting Group.
