Envision Highlights MTV’s Anniversary

‘Rockin’ 80’s’ remembers when music videos mattered

Envision Radio Networks’ “Rockin’ 80’s” show will offer a special two-hour program to celebrate the 30th anniversary of MTV (which, famously, launched with a song proclaiming that “video killed the radio star”).

Born, hatched, spawned, whatever, MTV appeared on Aug. 1, 1981 and, as they say, never looked back.

“The Rockin’ 80’s MTV 30th Anniversary Special” will hearken to MTV’s original format of rotating musical videos (rather than the menu of reality shows it offers today).

“Rockin’ 80’s” host Zander will examine network originators and many of the acts that used music videos, and hence MTV, to launch or enhance careers. The sudden power of MTV led in some instances to an arms race in musical video production among big acts and big labels.

Listed for inclusion are Van Halen, Def Leppard, Judas Priest and the Scorpions. The two-hour program is available July 27–Aug. 7.
