FCC Asks about Tweaking Ownership Reports

Comments on whether commercial, noncommercial licensees must provide SSN-based number are due Feb. 14

The FCC has several questions regarding FCC Form 323, the biennial commercial station ownership report.

Specifically, the agency is asking for public comments on its requirement that licensees “and other entities” that have an attributable interest in a station, and who are filling out Form 323, provide a social security number-based registration number generated by the commission.

In the Sixth Further Notice of Proposed Rulemaking, the agency also asks the public to weigh in on a proposal to require noncom station licensees to provide a social security number-based registration number generated by the commission on Form 323-E as well.

Comments on these proposals, as well as whether the agency should drop the “special use” FCC Registration Number are in the commission’s proposal as well.

Federal Register publication triggered comment deadlines: Comments are due to MB Docket 07-294 by Feb. 14 and replies by March 1.

Fletcher Heald’s Harry Cole lays out the history of the ownership report change here.
