FCC Invites Input on C4 Proposal

Idea is to insert Class C4 between Class A, C3

The FCC is taking public comments on a proposal to create another FM class of station, to be located between Class A and Class C3.

SSR Communications CEO Matt Wesolowski and the Minority Media and Telecommunications Council have spearheaded the effort; Wesolowski owns a 5 kW Class A in Flora, Miss.

They say if approved, the Class C4 would enable many Class A facilities to upgrade to a maximum effective radiated power of 12 kW from a reference antenna height of 100 meters above average terrain.

Nearly 140 broadcasters had signed the C4 petition as of July 10 after organizers made a renewed push to the commission to take some action this spring. Now, the agency has issued a notice on the concept, triggering a 30-day comment period.

Public comments are due to the commission on RM 11727 by Aug. 18.
