FCC Plans $289 Million in Fees

FCC Plans $289 Million in Fees

The FCC has proposed raising regulatory fees just over 3% to collect about $289 million in regulatory fees for 2006, in the August to September timeframe.
In addition, the commission is required to assess and collect an additional $10 million. It is asking for public comment on fees in general, and whether it should assess the extra amount on application fees, on regulatory fees or another form of assessment.
Regulatory fees must be paid for broadcast CPs that were issued on or before Oct. 1, 2005 and for station licenses granted by that date. (In cases where the license was transferred or assigned after Oct. 1, responsibility for payment lies with whoever held the permit as of the fee due date.)
The proposed radio fees (page 48) range from $625 for a Class A AM station serving a population of 25,000 or less to $9,125 for an FM Class C2 serving a population of more than 3 million.
Comments to MD Docket 06-68 are due April 14.
