Earlier, FCC Chairman Michael Powell told RW Online the agency was interested in quantifying whether towers are a danger to migratory birds and staff began looking into the issue. Now, the agency seeks public comment on a study by Avatar Environmental.
Although the results are described as preliminary, the environmental risk consulting firm has found more bird deaths occur under certain conditions such as: low light conditions, taller towers with lights and guyed towers. Certain species seem more at risk such as warblers and thrushes. Avatar says more study is needed.
Comments are due Jan. 13 (WT Docket 03-187.)
