Radio has enjoyed had a special place in the habits of drivers. That’s a good thing. On the other hand, over the years, when new features like text have been added to radio displays, or when new devices compete with radio in the dashboard, the question of driver distraction inevitably comes up.
That’s a big reason for radio folks to pay attention to this story thread. On Nov. 20, the Federal Communications Commission will hold a staff workshop on distracted driving.
Chairman Julius Genachowski recently pledged to Congress that the FCC would gather data on exactly what drivers do in their vehicles and explore technology innovations and applications that may eliminate or significantly reduce the problem of distracted driving.
The commission would then develop ways to educate the public about such dangerous behavior.
The workshop will be held at FCC’s Washington headquarters and is open to the public. The agenda will be released when final.
