First 50 Signed Up for People Meter

Here comes the Portable People Meter.
Arbitron has placed PPMs with the first 50 consumers in Wilmington, Del., for its trial of the new radio, TV and cable metering system.
The company expects to install meters in a panel of 300 consumers over the next two months. Eventually it will expand its sample to the larger Philadelphia market.
Arbitron plans to have about 70 broadcasters and cable networks encode their signals for the tests. The meter is a pager-sized device worn by the consumer; it detects inaudible codes in programming.
