Officials in Flagler County, Fla., think establishing their own noncommercial FM is one way to solve problems they’ve had in communicating with the public in emergencies.
According to a report in the Daytona Beach News-Journal, the experience of residents during the busy hurricane season of 2004 is part of the reason.
Officials said Flagler’s eventual goal is to establish an FM station in partnership with the county school board, in part because the county is not a sufficiently large market to receive timely information of its own.
Separately, the newspaper also reported that officials in the Flagler city of Palm Coast are considering either a low-powered AM station or an agreement with a local community college to help them get information out during emergencies.
