France Telecom, Europe*Star Launch Stellat Venture

France Téeecom and Europe*Star have announced a joint venture providing satellite-based broadcast and IP services to consumers in Europe, Africa and the Middle East.
Called Stellat, the venture covers the development, launch, operation and commercialization of a new satellite system. Investment in the project is projected to be $221 million (U.S.) over the next two years.
Based on the Alcatel Spacebus 3000 B3 platform the Stellat satellite will provide 10 C- and 35 Ku-band transponders from an orbit in 5 degrees West. Stellat will provide a continuity of service to current Telecom 2 customers using the 5 degrees West position.
Stellat will be part of the Loral Global Alliance, a consortium providing worldwide fixed satellite services.
