Former unlicensed low-power FM operator Alan Fried has petitioned the U.S. Supreme Court to hear his case against the federal government. Fried operated a 20 W station in Minneapolis without a license in 1996. The FCC fined him and confiscated his equipment for broadcasting without a license.
Fried told the court his constitutional rights have been violated because there was no way he could be on the air legally with a low-power station after the FCC stopped allocating frequencies for that classification.
The court may decide by December if it will hear the case.
