New stats out about use of media by gay and lesbian consumers. According to Qtopia Media a marketing consulting firm: 82% of gays listen to radio regularly. The top radio formats among gay listeners are top 40, modern rock, dance/rhythmic and non-commercial.
Also, 79% watch TV regularly; 76% watched gay-themed TV shows in the past three months; 76% read a local gay newspaper in that time.
"Strong showings for both radio and local gay newspapers confirm that 'spot' media work well to penetrate a metro's gay community," the company stated. "In addition, the use of local media is particularly efficient when targeting gay & lesbian consumers since the gay population tends to be more geographically concentrated."
The Mariposa Group conducted the survey.


Gay Radio Gets a Coming Out

Many ethnic or interest groups now can find a place on the dial that plays their tunes. For some programmers the next logical population segment to merit a targeted format is the gay, lesbian and bi-sexual/transgender community.
