Genevieve Newcomb Dies

She co-founded WFAX 63 years ago

Genevieve Newcomb has died.

She co-founded WFAX(AM) in 1948 with her late husband, Lamar, and at her death was corporate secretary and director. The Christian teaching radio station is based in northern Virginia.

Newcomb died on May 28. A service was set for today at a funeral home in Falls Church, Va., near where the station is located.

Her daughter Doris is the owner and manager of Newcomb Broadcasting, licensee of WFAX. Doris became president of the family business in 1989 and became WFAX general manager in 1994.

According to the station website, Genevieve Newcomb continued to play an active role in the station operations in her later years. It describes her as an accomplished, classically trained pianist and church soloist who was station program director and created its original “good music” format.

She is quoted on the website: “I just wanted to play beautiful music and fought the Lord all the way about going to an all religious format. But today, I can see how He has used WFAX in ways that I never imagined.”
